Storm day checklist (the 2-minute version)
- Get alerts more than one way. Phone emergency alerts on, a weather app, and a NOAA Weather Radio if you have one. Outdoor sirens are made for people outside, so don't count on hearing them indoors.
- Know your county. Warnings are issued by county and area. Oklahoma, Cleveland and Canadian counties cover most of the metro.
- Watch vs. warning. A watch means conditions are right, so keep an eye out. A warning means it's happening or about to, so head to your safe spot.
- Pick your safe spot now. A storm shelter or safe room is best. Otherwise go to the lowest floor, in a small interior room away from windows.
- Charge up. Phones and power banks topped off, with a flashlight handy.
- Shoes on, helmets handy. Sturdy shoes for everyone, plus bike helmets for the kiddos if you've got them.
- Pets ready. Leashes and carriers by the door so nobody's chasing the cat at go-time.
- Afterward, stay clear of downed power lines and let family know you're OK.
